Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens, first published in 1860-61. It follows the life of an orphan named Pip, who grows up in rural England and dreams of becoming a gentleman. Through mysterious circumstances, Pip receives financial support from a secret benefactor, allowing him to move to London and pursue his ambitions. Along the way, he becomes entangled with eccentric characters like Miss Havisham, the reclusive woman in a decaying mansion, and Estella, the cold-hearted girl he loves. The novel explores themes of social class, ambition, personal growth, and the moral consequences of one’s choices. It remains one of Dickens’ most popular and enduring works.
