A gorgeous traditional amber Murano scavo glass table lantern on an amber metal pedestal, entirely hand-produced on the famous glass-making island of Murano in the Venetian lagoon.
The mould for this beautiful lantern is first fashioned from steel wire. The glass-master then blows the molten glass into the frame where it expands into the lovely curved shape you see here, before it is allowed to cool.
A special chemical is used to erode parts of the surface of the glass, to give it the appearance of having been having been buried for a long time, and then dug up. The Italian word for 'dug up' or excavated is scavo - hence the name of this popular finish.
This lovely lantern is part of a small collection which includes a mix of co-ordinating table, wall ceiling and floor lighting.
